In response to the review into failures at South Australian’s Oakden Aged Mental Health Service, a new independent Aged Care Safety and Quality Commission which combines the functions of the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency, the Aged Care Complaints Commissioner and the aged care regulatory functions of the Department of Health..
The commission will operate from 2019 to oversee the approval, accreditation, assessment, monitoring, complaints handling and compliance of approved aged care providers.
Independent commissions do not have a very good name in Australia – think of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and its handling of the advice failures by the major banks since 2010. Generally such commissions have limited powers and resources to do an effective job.
