On 9 October 2018, the Commonwealth government the establishment of a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
The Commissioners are the Honourable Justice Joseph McGrath and Ms Lynelle Briggs AO.
It is proposed that the Royal Commission will run for 18 months and provide its final report by 30 April 2020.
Funding per resident dropped in the 2015 Commonwealth budget and it is well-known that staffing levels and salaries in the sector are amongst the lowest available. It will be unsurprising if the commissioners recommend a lift in spending on aged care -especially staffing levels and remuneration – which probably means an increase in fees for those who can afford to pay as the government will want to keep a cap on its own spending.
